Is anesthesia safe?
Modern anesthesia has never been safer. Our nurses will collect your child’s medical history and it will be reviewed carefully by our doctors. You may be referred to a hospital or surgery center if your child is in a higher risk category.
In what situations would you postpone anesthesia?
Anesthesia may be postponed based on a change in a patient’s medical condition or failure to strictly follow fasting requirements. Changes in the medical condition are usually a result of a recent infection such as an upper respiratory tract infection. Postponement of anesthesia will be based on an evaluation of the patient on the day of the procedure. We will make every attempt to screen for medical issues prior to the day of the procedure.
We follow strict fasting guidelines developed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists. We may postpone your anesthetic if the guidelines are not strictly followed. This is done for safety reasons to prevent gastric contents from getting in the lungs during sedation. Even a small amount of food can create significant amount of stomach acid and effect the safety of the procedure, therefore no exceptions are made to the fasting rules.
